German-Russian graduate and postgraduate program "Cultural transfer and cultural identity - German-Russian contacts in a European context"

Co-funded by the German DFG Research Foundation, the University of Freiburg and Russian State University for the Humanities (RSUH), this international graduate and postgraduate studies program (Graduiertenkolleg) is the first German-Russian program of this kind in the field of humanities.

Subject of studies: a long tradition of both national/bilateral and international studies in the field of Russian-German cultural contacts.

Purpose: to develop an innovative concept of interdisciplinary and international studies of cultural transfer. The studies center not only on German-Russian or Russian-German cultural contacts and transfers, but also on their connection with the pan-European tradition. A team of scholars is working on the question of the extent to which cultural transfer processes affect the phenomenon of cultural or national identity. The chronological framework of the study covers the period from the end of the XVII century to the present day.

Structure: The program accepts graduate students from both Germany and Russia (subject to admission to the graduate school of RSUH). Each student chooses three academic advisers from the Russian and German sides. Every year in November, graduate students and their advisors gather in Freiburg for a joint colloquium, as well as to participate in other academic events. For the same purposes, the program members meet annually in March in Moscow.

The dissertations are defended in Germany (for German students), in Russia (for Russians) in Russian, with the participation of an advisor from Germany.

Russian-Kazakh graduate and postgraduate studies "Document management, archival studies and documentation support"

The organization of the joint training of graduate and postgraduate students by the experts of RSUH in collaboration with the leading universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan began in 2018. This was stipulated by the Agreement between RSUH and the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. Then, in 2019, a similar Agreement was concluded with the Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University. This program for training highly qualified personnel in the field of document management, archival studies and documentation support is the only one of this kind in the post-Soviet space. In the Russian Federation it is focused on training graduate students, in Kazakhstan – on the training of specialists with a PhD diploma.

Currently, two specialists from the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and one from the Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University, who have a supervisor from their university and an academic adviser from RSUH, are participating in the program. The advisor, the academic consultant and the student agree on the topic of dissertation and the work plan; then, the consultant provides curatorial support for the student. The discussion, defense and publishing of the dissertation takes place under the joint title of RSUH and the partner university.

The head of the program from RSUH is Dr. Grigory Lanskoy, Associate Professor of History at the Department of Foreign Area Studies and Foreign Policy, Dean of the Department of Document Management and Technotronic Archives.
