Ecological history: sources, methods and research practices (Russia-West)

The program is a fundamentally new product in the Russian educational space, as it has a consistent practice-oriented approach and the curriculum is based on a balanced combination of fundamental theoretical knowledge and practical skills, including the diffusion of humanities and natural/technical sciences.

The interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary focus of the program is determined by the borderline position of environmental history, which entails a focus on the achievements of both the natural sciences and humanities.

Key disciplines of the program: History of state institutions and public organizations of Russia in the field of ecology and environmental protection; Ecological history: sources and historiography (Russia, Western Europe, USA); Interdisciplinary approaches in modern historical science; Historical research in the digital age: information resources, technologies and methods; Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in historical research; Internet resources of environmental history; Historical demography; Ecological archeology; History and theory of cultural landscape; Historical and cultural geography; Forest as a factor in Russian culture; Water history; Climate history; Soil history and soil science.

Areas of occupation: analytical and practical work in state sector and private institutions related to environmental issues and objects of cultural and natural heritage, ecological tourism, environmental education, educational work in the media and professional communities.

Our graduates are in demand in the field of environmental management and environmental policy of the Russian Federation. Due to the competencies in the field of social sciences and humanities, they can analyze social environmental movements, help overcome and resolve social conflicts in this area, taking into account the historical experience of interaction “humans vs. nature”.
