The course emphasizes the role of cross-cultural awareness in the overall training of a would-be translator and interpreter. It enables students to deepen and specify the notion of “culture”, come to the conclusion that cultures vary in solutions to common problems and dilemmas, analyze the types of culture according to E. Hall. In practical terms the course helps to view a translator and interpreter as a mediator in cross-cultural interaction through awareness of cultural differences, respecting them and reconciling cultural dilemmas through understanding cultural identity, mental stereotypes, focusing on language and identity. The course includes case-study and training in translation and interpretation of course-related texts.
