The course aims to help students of English develop and enhance stylistic appreciation of a wide range of text types (both literary and non-literary, including oratory, science prose, news reports and many more). This, in its turn, is expected to contribute to students’ own stylistic flexibility and repertoire as language users.
The students taking the course work systematically through all the levels of the language (phonetic, morphological, lexical, syntactical etc.) to identify and familiarize themselves with a variety of expressive means and stylistic devices found in English. Using linguistic tools students learn how to look for and interpret stylistic dimensions of a text. As part of the course, the functional styles of the English language are explored in terms of their characteristic features and typical contexts so that, as a result, students can make informed and conscious choices between stylistic and linguistic alternatives in their own speech and writing.
