On May 12, a lecture by Dr. Zoya Metlitskaya took place at RSUH. The topic was “The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle: Authors and Addressees”.
The object of the presentation was a chronicle in six manuscripts in Old English, written in the 9th-11th centuries and later united under the name "Anglo-Saxon Chronicle".
The purpose of the first part of the Chronicle is to tell about the settlement of Britain and the deeds and victories of Alfred the Great.
The second part negatively assesses the actions of the king and the Anglo-Saxon nobility during the wars with the Vikings of the 10th-11th centuries; it is not known why this part was written and to what extent it is objective.
To familiarize themselves with the translation of the chronicle, Zoya Yuryevna recommended to the audience the classic edition by Charles Plummer and warned against using the publicly available, but inadequate translation by John Giles.
