Neocolonialism: a new look at Africa and Asia

“The global south, which includes both Africa and Asia, is undergoing turbulent processes that are very important for the future of the entire planet, and this topic is extremely relevant for us, both in terms of understanding terminology and in terms of oriental studies and African studies in general,” said Efim Pivovar, Academic Director of RSUH, at the international conference “Modern Neocolonialism in Africa and Asia".

On December 24, RSUH hosted a discussion of socio-political, religious, educational and cultural processes in the countries of Africa and Asia. Dr. Alikber Alikberov, Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, spoke to the guests. He noted the importance of each nation protecting their national interests and the relevance of the issues of neocolonialism and post-colonialism.

"As part of the construction of a new multipolar world, a number of questions arise including the nature of neocolonialism, how and under what conditions it came into existence, and whether Russia is historically a neocolonial country," he said.

The presentations touched upon the current issues in African and Asian countries: "Legal Support for International Cooperation of the Russian Federation with African Countries", "Extra-Regional Actors in the South Caucasus: Intersection and Clash of Interests", "African Vector of French Foreign Policy". The participants paid special attention to the relations between Russia and Iran, their historical features and prospects.
