Spiritual and Moral Education at Universities

On the contribution of RSUH to the preservation and strengthening of traditional spiritual and moral values in the educational environment.

“Until recently, in order to please the Western political agenda, religious tradition was replaced by a surrogate. The result was inevitably the blurring of cultural identity, which led to the uncritical acceptance of destructive neoliberal ideology by young people,” noted Metropolitan Evgeny of Yekaterinburg and Verkhoturye in his speech at the 2nd Interregional Conference “Spiritual and Moral Education at Universities,” which took place on January 27 as part of the 33rd International Christmas Educational Readings in the conference hall of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.

During the Conference, the participants, discussing the modern realities of the blurred boundaries of national identity, the formalized, almost rhetorical concept of patriotism, repeatedly turned to the historical point of no return at the end of the 20th century. Thus, according to the Deputy Head of the World Russian People's Council Alexander Shchipkov, having failed to protect our "sacred ideas" in the 90s, we are now forced to defend them from the collective West with weapons in hand.

It was the Military Operation that gave a powerful impetus to the revision of youth policy and educational work in the Russian Federation, which is still carried out in the Soviet paradigm, on a secular basis, without understanding the subject of identity, inextricably linked with religious tradition. According to the Deputy Director of the Department of State Youth Policy and Educational Activities of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation Anna Braines, it is teachers, vice-rectors for educational work that are the people who shape the consciousness and worldview of our younger generation.

"Today, there is a separate block of events aimed at improving the qualifications and retraining of vice-rectors, in accordance with the Decree of the President on traditional spiritual and moral values," said Anna Braines.

Incidentally, on the basis of RSUH, from April 22 to December 16, 2024, a set of educational events on civilizational identity of Russia and educational work in higher education was organized and held for vice-rectors. Rector of the RSUH Andrei Loginov notes that today the main mission of the university is to restore the integrity of the humanitarian space of Russia, largely lost over the years of expansion of alien models. To date, 70 people have completed this course.

Also, during the Conference, the participants summed up the results of 2024 in terms of interaction between the Russian Orthodox Church and higher education. In addition, the meeting discussed the prospects and vectors of further joint work, issues of sovereignty of domestic higher education and other issues of church-state interaction in the field of higher education and science.
