Days of Museum Studies at RSUH

On May 14–16, RSUH, on the eve of International Museum Day, hosted the IV Festival “Days of Museum Studies at RSUH”, designed to popularize museums and related professions among young people.

Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Pavel Shkarenkov opened the Festival and delivered a welcoming speech. He emphasized the close connection that RSUH had with the museum world: the Shanyavsky Moscow People's University, which we consider the predecessor of RSUH, and the Alexander III Museum of Fine Arts (now the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts) had been opened in the same year, and in 1997, the Tsvetaev Educational Art Museum had also been created, connecting the University even more closely with one of the largest art museums. In 1988, for the first time in our country, a Department of Museum Affairs was opened. The idea of ​​training museum personnel at a university level remains very relevant.

Tatyana Rybkina, Minister of Culture of the Tula Region, told the Festival participants about the development of the museum network, which currently includes more than 120 museums, many of which had been formed or reached a higher level of work in the last decade.

Olga Chistanova, Executive Director of ICOM Russia, spoke about the activities of ICOM in Russia.

The first festival day continued with an open lecture by Natalya Alexandrova, Chair of the Department of Manuscripts of the Pushkin Museum, about the legendary Chief Curator of the Pushkin Museum, Andrei Guber.

The first day ended with Yuri Vedenin, Chairman of the Board of the Society for the Study of the Russian Estate, presenting his exhibition “Yuri Vedenin. From open color to halftones”.

The second day was dedicated to the topic of research in the museum. The participants met with the author of the publication “Theatrocracy. Catherine II and Opera" of the State Museum-Reserve "Tsaritsyno", Dr. Anna Korndorf, and the top executives of the Museum-Reserve.

Dr. Dmitry Rodionov, Chair of the Department of History of Theater and Cinema of RSUH, spoke about the importance of studyingthe history of Russian theater.

Dr. Anna Korndorf touched upon the issue of studying the tangible and intangible heritage associated with the history of Russian theater.

Dr. Victoria Petukhova spoke about setting up an exhibition, and Dr. Liliya Khafizova introduced the guests to the publishing program, new catalogs and guides of the Tsaritsyno State Museum.

Current issues of museum practice and the role that research plays in it were raised during an open discussion, which was attended by Dr. Anton Goryanov, Chair of the Section of Museum and Exhibition Work of the Moscow Department of Culture, Dr. Anneta Sundieva, Dr. Yulia Chursina, Director of the Tsvetaeva House-Museum, and Dr. Larisa Pletnikova, editor of the magazine “Museum World”.

The students of the Faculty of Archival and Documentation Studies conducted a master class “Russian Easter greetings”.

Dr. Olga Eremina, Chief Curator of Museum Objects of the State Museum-Estate "Ostankino and Kuskovo" and Dr. Elena Ukhanova, senior researcher of "Ostankino and Kuskovo", spoke about how the Museum, currently closed for restoration, organizedexhibitions jointly with other museums, as well as what discoveries could be made by studying the history of a museum and its owners.

Dr. Natalya Alexandrova, Curator of Museum Objects of the Pushkin State Museum, touched upon the topic of genealogical research in museum practice.

A special event of the Festival was the presentation of the magazine “Museum World”, one of the organizers of the Festival. The magazine has been published since 1931 and is the oldest professional periodical publication in the country. Irina Novoselova, Art Director of the magazine, spoke about its history and mission, its projects, and why it was still very important to publish articlesabout cultural heritage.

A new item in this year’s Festival program was the competition of creative youth projects “Young People Go to the Museum”.
