Sergei Petrovich Lavlinsky passed away

Dr. Sergei Petrovich Lavlinsky, Professor of the Department of Theoretical and Historical Poetics, the best literature teacher in the world, a scholar of renown, our close friend and colleague, has passed away

Sergey Petrovich was “The Man from Kemerovo”, he was born there, grew up and graduated from Kemerovo State University. For over forty years he taught literature at school, and at the same time showed everyone exactly how to teach it. He was the kind of teacher to reach even the most difficult teenagers and students.

From 1987 to 2000, he worked at the Department of Literary Theory at Kemerovo State University.  In 2001 he started working at the Department of Theoretical and Historical Poetics of RSUH, where he taught courses on literary text analysis, literary theory, and literary education.

He is the author of the only book of its kind, “Technology of Literary Education,” and many articles on receptive aesthetics, the poetics of modern drama, the visual in literature, the theory and methodology of modern literary education. He was also the editor of the dictionary of modern Russian drama.

Sergei Petrovich knew and loved cinema and rock music, being no stranger to creativity himself: he penned several plays and film scripts, and repeatedly performed musical and recitative compositions with rock musicians and even recorded several discs. He taught us all what real rock pedagogy was about, and that a person can always be a teacher to another.

Sergei Petrovich also conducted a special seminar “The Visual in Literature” for many years. The last of the classes was a few hours before he passed away. They talked, fittingly, about death, in cinema and literature.

Dear Sergei Petrovich, we already miss you. We love and will always love you. Rest in peace!
