On April 22-23, the IV All-Russian Conference of Young Scholars "Modern Research Approaches to Art and Culture" was held at the Faculty of Art History.
Traditionally, the Conference brings together young art and film critics, experts in visual studies and social contexts of contemporary art, future art managers, and curators.
The purpose of the Conference, as always, was to discuss new approaches to the study of art by young scholars.
The objectives of the Conference were unlocking the potential of interdisciplinary approaches to the study of art, a detailed consideration of the phenomena of artistic life, both in the old and in the newest art, discussion of new methods of studying art as well as establishing their boundaries and possibilities.
The first session was devoted to new approaches to the interpretation of images belonging to different traditions and new social and artistic movements.
The session was opened by the presentation of RSUH student Ms. Elena Matveeva “Christus Triumphans and Christus Patiens: the origins of the iconographic evolution of crucifixes in the context of the religious ideas of the Middle Ages”, where the speaker showed the development of the mystical overtones in the image of the crucifix.
In the final part of the Conference, Dr. Kon presented the project “Philosophical Paradise” of the Department of Philosophical Anthropology of Moscow State University, and Dr. Markov presented the projects of the Department of Cinema and Contemporary Art.
In general, the Conference showed that the study of art at the present stage requires problematizing the usual oppositions, such as monumental/applied, aesthetic/practical, representation/expression and others, showing those complex structures of aesthetic and social experience that stand behind each opposition.
