Russian State University for the Humanities was created in March 1991 on the basis of Moscow State Institute of History and Archives. It was established by the Decree of the Central Executive Committee and the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR "On the opening of the Institute of Archival Studies under the Central Archival Administration of the USSR and on the transfer of the Office of Archival Studies under the Central Archival Administration of the RSFSR to the jurisdiction of the Archival Administration of the USSR" dated September 30 1930”.

Alfons Leonovich Shanyavsky (1837-1905) - major general, gold miner, philanthropist, one of the founders of the People's University
The bust of Alfons Shanyavsky is located near the stairs leading to the Museum on the first floor of building 7.
Alexander Vasilyevich Chayanov (1888-1937) - economist, writer, peasant expert. The street on which the main building of RSUH is located is named after Alexander Chayanov, a scholar and writer who penned both mystical novels and classic works on cooperation.
Ivan Vladimirovich Tsvetaev (1847-1913) - historian, art critic
A part of the museum complex of RSUH is named after Ivan Tsvetaev. He was the father of the poetess Marina Tsvetaeva, but above all he was a well-known art critic and teacher at Moscow University.
Lev Semyonovich Vygotsky (1896-1934) - psychologist, founder of the cultural-historical school in psychology. He graduated from the Faculty of History and Philosophy of the Shanyavsky University in 1917 and made an invaluable contribution to the development of Russian psychology and psycholinguistics.
Today, the Institute of History and Archives of RSUH is considered the forge of leading experts in its field in Russia and abroad. Its graduates hold high positions in the public service, run museums and archives. To get acquainted with its landmarks, educational tours are conducted every weekend, developed by the Knorozov Center.
Students can also visit the Museum Center of RSUH. This is an innovative research platform that embodies the principles of “Education through Art” and is a unique cultural and educational center that brings together numerous exhibition halls.
For additional information for a thesis or term paper, as well as for self-education, you can contact the Library of the RSUH. The faculty of the Institute of History and Archives began to form the fund of their own library in 1934, which also included books from the Central Archival Administration of the RSFSR.
For new books and stationery with the RSUH logo, you can go into the bookshop "At the Centaur". There you can find classic and newly published works of Russian and foreign scholars, monographs on the latest discoveries in the field of humanitarian thought, as well as fiction and children's literature.
RSUH also has a Foreign Languages Training Center, where students can learn English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Swedish. Training takes place with a view to preparing students (15 years old and above) for international placement exams.
