International round-table "Witchcraft and national religion in Russia and Western Europe"

On the 23 of May 2006 the round-table on the theme "Witchcraft and national religion in Russia and Western Europe" was held in the Russian State University for the Humanities. The event was confined to the publication of the Russian translation of the book by Professor of the University of London, a member of the British Academy, the President of the British Society of folklorists, William Frances Ryan "The Bathhouse at Midnight. An historical Survey of Magic and Divination in Russia" (Moscow: NLO, 2006). The event was organized by the Marc Bloc Russian-French center for historical anthropology and the Publishing house "New Literary Observer".

Participants of the round-table had tasks to discuss the debatable problems of studying the national culture in Russia and Western Europe the medieval period and early Modern Times (history of magic and witchcraft, national religiosity); to give a critical evaluation of contemporary research in these areas; to identify the further research program with the participation of Russian and foreign scientists.
