On the 28th of January, 2008 an International scientific and practical conference "The Korean language: Prospect of research and teaching methodology" opened in the Russian State University for the Humanities.
Opening the conference, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea to Russia, Lee Kyuhyung noted the importance of strengthening of relations and the development of scientific cooperation between the two countries. He thanked the organizers of the conference for the interest in the Korean language and Korean history, and expressed confidence that the conference would be constructive and fruitful.
Vice-President of the Korean Foundation Pack Chzhunku told about many programs and projects of the Foundation. He noted that Russia is one of the main partners of the Fund, and thanked the Russian State University for the Humanities for the opportunity of holding the conference within the walls of one of the leading humanitarian universities in the country.
Director of the Institute for Oriental cultures and classical antiquity, Ilya S. Smirnov, noted the presence of strong linguistic training and known Philological school in the Institute and underlined the actuality of scientific research in the field of Oriental Languages.
Chairman of the Russian Association of university Korean (RAUK), Professor S. O. Kurbanov told about the history of the creation of this organization, which unites 6 Institutes of higher education, and which includes the RSUH. The conference was organized by the RAUK jointly with the Korea Foundation.
Professor of the London University, Yon Chekhun told about the existing methodologies of teaching the Korean language in Europe, how they have developed and improved. He stressed that the level of proficiency in a language, first of all, depends on diligence and abilities of the students, and therefore the teacher task is in identifying of the student potential, and he must build a course according to it.
L.R. Kontsevich (Institute for Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences) told about the forthcoming conversion of the almanac "the Russian Korean" in the annual scientific journal. He stressed the need to determine the range of topics by joint efforts that will be interested to modern experts, and urged colleagues to cooperate with the publication.
The conference was continued under the framework of sections dealing with questions of methodology of teaching the Korean language, existing tutorials and requirements to the new textbooks, goals, tasks and prospect for the development of the Association of Korean Language Teachers of Institutes of higher education in Russia.
