The rector of the RSUH, Efim I. Pivovar, opening the session, noted that in the approached year the first Council begins with a solemn ceremony of presentation with Honorary Doctorate, HONORIS CAUSA, of the Russian State University for the Humanities, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Guatemala to the Russian Federation, Lars Pira.
The following heads of diplomatic missions to Russia attended at the ceremony in the Hall of the Academic Council: the representatives from the Republic of Bolivia, the Republic of Colombia, the United Mexican States, the Republic of Nicaragua, Panama, the Republic of Paraguay, the Republic of Chile, the Republic of Ecuador, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the RF, the Institute of Latin America RAS (Russian Academy of Sciences).
Efim I. Pivovar stressed that Russia is linked to Guatemala by long-standing scientific communication, which have established through scientific feats of our compatriot, a distinguished scholar Yuri V. Knorozov, who had decrypted ancient Maya Indians hieroglyphic letter in 1950-es, and for the first time he saw with his own eyes monuments of this ancient civilization on Guatemalan soil in 1990. The RSUH continues to develop the best domestic traditions of study Mesoamerican civilizations, in particular with the framework of Y.V.Knorozov Mesoamerican research center.
The rector noted that during stay in Russia Lars Pira had done utmost from him to strengthen good-neighbourliness and cooperation between the two countries, strengthen scientific and educational and cultural ties, helped to establish direct contacts between the RSUH and universities of Guatemala. In 2007, Days of Guatemala took place in the RSUH; in its framework Lars Pira gave a lecture on the history of his country and the dynamics of the development of relations between Guatemala and Russia.
Efim I. Pivovar presented to Ambassador a diploma and mantle Honorary Doctor, HONORIS CAUSA, of the Russian State University for the Humanities, expressed his gratitude for his attention to joint projects with our university and wished success in a new high post of Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Guatemala.
Lars Pira, in his turn, thanked the rector and the whole team of the university for the profitable cooperation, attention to the study of history and culture of his country and training professionals with appropriate expertise. The Ambassador noted that in the new post he would make every effort for the further consolidation of scientific and educational ties between Guatemala and Russia.
