All-Russian Conference "First international readings on Canadian studies at RSUH in memory of Dr. Koleneko"

The event was held on April 4, 2024, organized by the International Russian-Canadian Center “Moscow-Quebec” of RSUH and the Department of American Studies of the Faculty of International Relations of RSUH in collaboration with the Center for Canadian Studies of St. Petersburg State University and the Russian Society for the Study of Canada.

The conference was dedicated to the memory of Professor Vadim Koleneko (1943 – 2011), an outstanding Russian specialist in the history of Canada and Quebec in the 17th – 21st centuries. The main topic of his research was the socio-economic and political history of French Canada, which has determined the peculiarities of the development of the Canadian Federation as a whole.

At the opening of the Conference, Dr. Zabotkina, Acting Vice-Rector for International Relations of RSUH, addressed the participants with a welcoming speech. She emphasized the importance of studying the historical and cultural heritage of Canada in Russia.

Dr. Zhuravleva, Head of the Department of American Studies of RSUH, drew attention to the role of Canada in regional and global processes, which must be considered when shaping Russian foreign policy, especially taking into account the prospects for the Russian-Canadian interaction in the Arctic.

Dr. Akimov, Director of the Center for Canadian Studies at St. Petersburg State University, emphasized that the Conference was being held within the framework of the current agreement on scientific cooperation between RSUH and St. Petersburg State University, one of the main actors of which is the International Russian-Canadian Center “Moscow - Quebec" of RSUH and the Center for Canadian Studies at St. Petersburg State University.

Dr. Kuzmina, President of the Russian Society for the Study of Canada, spoke about the role that RSUH plays in the development of research projects dedicated to Canada. Kuzmina presented a Certificate of Gratitude to Rector Bezborodov, for many years of cooperation in the field of Canadian research and support of the activities of the Russian-Canadian Center “Moscow-Quebec” of RSUH. A commendations were also presented to Dr. Isaeva, Director of the Moscow-Quebec Center.

The Conference was held in the format of two plenary sessions: "Quebec: culture and history" and "Current issues of Canadian studies”. The event was attended by 30 representatives of the Russian academic community from leading universities and research institutes in Russia.
